Father of Chang'e "Ouyang Ziyuan: China has the ability to fly further

28 Sep, 2025

Ouyang Ziyuan, an academician of the CAS Member, the chief scientist of China's lunar exploration project and the "father of Chang'e", said in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province on the 25th that China should fly farther and has the ability to fly farther.

On that day, the Qingyun Mozi Forum with the theme of "China's Aerospace, Exploring the Universe" was held in Qingyunpu District, Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province. Four well-known academicians and experts, Ouyang Ziyuan, Long Lehao, Zheng Yongchun, and Pang Zhihao, gathered here to discuss China's aerospace deep space exploration.

The Chinese lunar exploration project, also known as the Chang'e Project, which began in 2004, is divided into three stages: unmanned lunar exploration, manned lunar landing, and establishment of a lunar base. The "unmanned lunar exploration" stage is divided into surrounding exploration, lunar soft landing and patrol exploration, and automatic sampling and return.

Ouyang Ziyuan introduced that the reserves of helium-3 resources on the moon are about 1.03 million to 1.29 million tons, which can at least meet the energy needs of humans for 10000 years. As of February 28, 2011, the Chang'e-2 spacecraft has obtained 2.84TB of raw detection data through in orbit exploration. The ground application system has been calibrated and processed to generate 7.86TB, which has been released to Chinese universities, research institutes, and enterprises for research and application.

In May 2016, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council of China issued the "National Innovation Driven Development Strategy Outline", which proposed a three-step strategic goal: China will enter the ranks of innovative countries by 2020, become one of the top innovative countries by 2030, and build a world strong science and technology innovation country by 2050.

Regarding this, Ouyang Ziyuan revealed that it is expected to launch a Chinese Mars probe in 2020 and land on Mars around 2021 to carry out joint exploration of the Mars orbiter and rover.

Ouyang Ziyuan said that the main scientific issues of Mars exploration include detecting information on Martian life activities, Martian ontology, exploring the long-term transformation of Mars, and the prospect of establishing a second habitat for humans through large-scale immigration in the future. Through unremitting efforts, mankind will strive to transform this barren planet into a new world with friendly ecological environment, making Earth Mars a sisters community for the sustainable development of human society.

China should fly further, China has the ability to fly further, "said Ouyang Ziyuan. The exploration and development of the moon and solar system have ensured and enriched a better future for humanity, making greater contributions to the sustainable development of human society.
