March 8th, 2025, World Water Day On the occasion of China Water Week, the Water Conservancy Engineering Technology Branch of the China International Association for the Promotion of Science and Technology (hereinafter referred to as the Water Conservancy Branch) organized a science popularization launch event with the theme of "Protecting Water Conservancy Engineering and Serving the National Economy and People's Livelihood" at the Guo Shoujing Memorial Hall and the West Sea of Shichahai in Beijing. More than 80 teachers, students, and residents participated in the event.

In 2025, the United Nations designated the theme of World Water Day as "Glacier Preservation", translated as "Glacier Conservation"; The Chinese Ministry of Water Resources has determined the theme of "China Water Week" as "Promoting High Quality Development of Water Resources and Ensuring China's Water Security". The Water Conservancy Engineering Technology Branch of the China International Association for the Promotion of Science and Technology has designated World Water Day The theme of China Water Week is "Protecting Water Conservancy Projects for the National Economy and People's Livelihood".

During the event that day, Dr. Li Guibao, the chief science popularization expert of the Water Resources Branch, explained to teachers, students, and community residents the water management story of Guo Shoujing, a master of water science in the Yuan Dynasty, and his tremendous contributions to the capital city of Beijing and the Grand Canal. The event also examined the effectiveness of post seawater ecological governance and restoration. Dr. Li Guibao explained the theory and practice of Beijing's river and lake chief system and water ecosystem restoration. Everyone agrees that living and studying in Beijing with such a good water environment and landscape is a sign that our party and government attach great importance to ecological environment and water conservancy. Every student and resident should consciously protect water resources and manage water projects.

Building, managing, and maintaining water conservancy projects is the foundation for ensuring China's water security. The numerous water conservancy projects distributed throughout the country are responsible for important functions for China's national economy and people's livelihood, such as flood control, water supply, power generation, irrigation, drainage, aquaculture, and so on. Therefore, carrying out popular science propaganda activities on "protecting water conservancy projects and serving the national economy and people's livelihood" has important practical significance.

In the near future, the Water Conservancy Branch will organize more experts, professors, and research institutes to carry out various water conservancy science popularization activities, including campus lectures, community science popularization, grassroots lectures, etc., to make some contributions to promoting the high-quality development of water conservancy.
