ITU World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly Held in New Delhi, India

On October 15, the ITU World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly 2024 (WTSA-24) opened in New Delhi, India. The session focused on defining the standardization development priorities and Study Group chairmanships for ITU’s 2025–2028 study period, and hosted the 5th Global Standardization Symposium. Shan Zhongde, Vice Minister of Industry and Information Technology, headed the Chinese delegation to the assembly and delivered a speech.Shan Zhongde stated that the Chinese government attaches great importance to the innovative development and application of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and the metaverse. It vigorously advances new industrialization, strengthens research on policies, technologies and standards, and drives the high-end, intelligent and green transformation of industries. Balancing high-quality development with high-level security, China has put forward the Global AI Governance Initiative. It enhances international cooperation in standards, technology, talent cultivation and industrial development, and promotes the inclusive, beneficial and people-oriented development of AI and other emerging technologies. China upholds the new development philosophy of innovation, coordination, green development, openness and shared benefits, practices the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative, advocates open innovation, cooperation and win-win outcomes, and strives to build a community with a shared future for mankind.

The World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly is ITU’s key decision-making event on the strategic direction of standardization, institutional restructuring and management elections. Held every four years, it ranks among the most influential global conferences in the field of information and communications standardization. More than 3,000 representatives from over 150 ITU Member States, relevant international organizations and enterprises attended the event. China dispatched a delegation of over 70 representatives from competent government authorities, telecom operators, manufacturers and research institutions.During the assembly, Shan Zhongde met with elected ITU officials and heads of information and communications authorities from Russia, South Africa, Egypt, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and other countries. The two sides exchanged in-depth views on advancing global cooperation in digital technology and standardization. Officials from relevant departments of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology also participated in the activities.
